The highlight of the week was to jump into our new unit of study, wondering about the 3 R's - recycle, reuse and reduce, and guess what, we have found a fourth one - REPAIR! We will practice what we learn at home, so watch how our little people will become aware of saving our planet!
In these pictures we are putting banana peels, paper and plastic into soil, made a prediction about what would happen to each one after four weeks, and will surely let you know.
In Writing Workshop we have started our new unit, "Authors as Mentors." We are concentrating on the author Tomie de Paula and using his writing skills to inspire us in our own stories. This week we spent time exploring his books and starting to think about some of the skills and techniques he uses to make his writing even more special. These are called "craft moves." We will also be thinking about where authors get their ideas from and will use this to generate our own ideas.
In Reading Workshop, our focus has shifted to "Reader's Theatre." In this unit we will learn about role-playing and will have the opportunity to to act out the roles of characters in our books. Students will take on the roles of familiar characters and try to "walk in their shoes." This unit will develop students' reading skills further through inference, activating prior knowledge and empathising with characters. There is also a big focus on reading with expression.
In Mathematics we will learn more about Addition and Subtraction in this new unit. We enjoy extending our game "Toss the chips", and is excited about finding different strategies to help us in our problem solving.
Another highlight was Thursday when Ms Lipika came in to help us with some fun activities in the kitchen, counting in Maths and producing yummy candy necklaces in the process. Thank you Ms Lipika!
